Welcome, brave adventurers…

… to the one hundred ninety-fourth entry into our chronicle, recorded on Saturday, January 1st, and released Wednesday, January 5th over at heroesrisepodcast.com.

In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Ryu … like… wow, she doesn’t even have the hat on.

Next we’re taking a Long Rest as we find out if my mother hooked up with a dragon.

Finally we head over to the Scrying Pool to see what you [all] have to say.

Community Questions
Were you aware of the origins of the dragonborn before our expose? Did you think they were half-breed dragons before? Does this change your opinion about how to play the characters?
Have you played a particularly memorable dragonborn? Did they follow the rigid, extreme attitudes suggested by the book descriptions, or did you play one that went “against type”? Did that cause them to stand out in your game, or were all dragonborn imagined differently?

Hey guys! I’ve been listening to the podcast for quite a while now and have only recently caught up to the latest episode. I really love your show! You guys are my go-to place for D&D news and I always look forward to hearing your thoughts on new releases. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to comment on old episodes but now that I’m all caught up, I finally can! I just hope this reaches you before the recordings.

Regarding dragonborn, I had a strong dislike for the race both mechanically and lore-wise (prior to the release of Fizban’s).

Mechanically, I’ve found the PHB dragonborn to be highly disappointing. A large number of new players at my table would create dragonborn PCs only to be disappointed upon finding out they could only use their breath weapon once per long rest. I modified the ability and gave it a recharge chance instead which helped a little early in the campaign, but didn’t make the breath weapon any more viable at higher levels.

In terms of lore, my players and I had difficulty finding information on dragonborn details within the 5e published material, and when we found information online, it all seemed so convoluted and made the race sound even less dragon-related than what everyone had assumed. I eventually just never included any dragonborn in my games since.

Following the release of Fizban’s, however, I’ve been thinking of running a homebrew setting where dragons have conquered the world and dragonborn are a result of humanoids exposed to the steeping effects of dragons over multiple generations.

That’s it. Thanks for everything you guys do and I look forward to the next episode!
