Heroes Rise, fifty-ninth entry: No News is Good News?

Welcome, brave adventurers…

… to the fifty-ninth entry into our chronicle, recorded on Saturday, January 26th 2019, and released Wednesday, January 30th 2019 over at heroesrisepodcast.com

For this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Ostron mounts up for a token effort. Next we check out some D&D News as we uncover:

  • Something? Maybe… We’re hoping something drops in the next 10 minutes, otherwise this is going to be an interesting recording!

After that we take a Short Rest and check out some Unearthed Mundana to discuss imposter syndrome, before finally looking into the scrying pool to see what you have to say.

Really liked this episode. The news segment was more informative than most news segments. WOTC tends to give out information in such a secretive way you would think they were the CIA.

My favorite supplement so far has been Dragon Heist: Waterdeep. The book allows my group to have a familiar setting to use and I like the fact that it has great structure while allowing me to detail the city as I need.

As for Imposter Syndrome, I have noticed that a lot of the new 5e players suffer from the ailment. I’m 52 and have been playing/DM’ing for over 35 years. We didn’t have streaming or podcasts. We didn’t know how bad we were. We played because we loved it. New players today compare themselves to who they watch. They want to be good overnight and that’s not going to happen. I’m not Matt Mercer but people still show up to play, so I must be doing something good.

On a side note. Ostron, are you going to TotalCon. I will be DM’ing on Thursday and Saturday and would really like to meet you. Also, you might think about interviewing the guys from TRI (The Role Initiative) They do a great job organizing the D&D community in New England and do a lot of charity work.

Thanks for the podcasts. Keep up thee good work

Loved this episode. The lack of news just gave us an opportunity to delve into other things, and the 5e books was a great place to go. So far I’ve enjoyed all of the books that I’ve had the opportunity to read and use. The PHB in particular is my favorite. It is so easy to use for character building. It’s only downside for me is the spell descriptions. It’s torture having to sift through them all to decide which spells you want your casters to use but sadly i have no idea how to improve this without adding another 50 (mostly repetitive) pages to the book. I also loved The Tomb of Annihilation book and am desperate to be part of a campaign in that steamy jungle. Ryu, you have some experience there, yes?

Back to last week’s entry, lets talk Warlord. There were two 4e classes that I loved and have missed in 5e. The Warlord and the Warden. I feel like they tried to capture much of these classes with the 5e Fighter class but they’re sort of watered down like this. I bought the Warlord class description because I was intrigued. I love it. Hope to see it become official.
Keep up the awesome work Heroes Rise!

Thank you for the segment on Imposter Syndrome. As an author, it’s something we talk about a lot in our community and since DMs are essentially story tellers, it makes sense that we would suffer from that as well.

In fact, in the podcast that I listened to immediately after yours, the author being interviewed explicitly said that he suffered from it.

Again, thanks for making even obscure things relevant.
