Heroes Rise, twenty-fifth entry: Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes

Welcome, brave adventurers…

… to the twenty-fifth entry into the Heroes Rise chronicle. This episode was recorded on Saturday, 19th May 2018, and made available for download on Wednesday, 23rd May 2018 at heroesrisepodcast.com

We’re skipping Adventurer’s Pack this week and diving straight into D&D News as we cover:

  • The latest Unearthed Arcana featuring Centaurs and Minotaurs
  • And the release, recall and further teasers from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes

After that we take a Short Rest and start getting defensive, before finally looking into the scrying pool to see what you have to say.

One of my favorite things about 5Ed is that there have been very little complaints about it. It has really been a bit of a gamer’s darling. Enter stunted Minotaur, stack-able Shetland pony Centaur, and black powder toting space hippos… On the bright side they are bringing Kender back into play. (I love Lennon’s visceral disdain for the Kender.) Sadly, I have yet to receive my copy of MTOF. As with many others, I’ll be waiting for my Amazon delivery on the 29th. I’m very excited by how excited you all were about the new book’s lore entries. Although I don’t DM, I find that reading and learning about the D&D universe helps to immerse me in my games. It also gives me ideas for future character building and back stories. As my memory sucks, this immersion does not result in meta gaming. Keep up the great work Heroes! I look forward every week to sitting for a spell and pondering your thoughts.

I liked The Hobbyist’s comment above about the “Shetland pony Centaur”.

Perhaps WotC is doing for Centaurs what the AKC (American Kennel Club) did for dog breeds: Toy, Small (“Minature”), Medium, Large, and Giant. So these are “Medium Centaurs”. It’s just not a size of centaur we’ve ever seen before anywhere in fantasy literature. They are, however, stackable, which should count for something.

Regarding the Giff (and is that with a hard ‘G’ or a soft ‘G’ (as if .gif)), does anyone remember the Judoon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judoon) from Doctor Who? They are a rhinoceros-like race which served as mercenary police[men|women|persons]. They are definitely lawful (strict, precise) and brutal. One step away from mercenary military aliens.

They first appeared in 2007 in a Doctor Who episode (“Smith and Jones”). They went on to regularly appear in episodes from then on.

I have been saying this over and over. That’s exactly who I think of when ppl talk of the Giff! ~RaeRae
