Heroes Rise, eighteenth entry: Beholder? I Hardley Know Her!

Welcome, brave adventurers…

… to the eighteenth entry into the Heroes Rise chronicle. This episode was recorded on Saturday, 31st March 2018, and made available for download on Wednesday, 4th April 2018 at heroesrisepodcast.com

In this week’s Adventurer’s Pack, Lennon decides to get revenge by showing us some minis of a different kind. Next we check out some D&D News as we cover:

  • The latest video from D&D Beyond featuring Beholders
  • The winners and losers of the second battle of Mordenkainen’s Mayhem
  • Some more D&D Lootcrate goodness
  • And a new book named “Art and Arcana” coming later this year

After that we take a Short Rest and look in the Gnomish Workshop to find out if we’re going to die, before finally looking into the scrying pool to see what you have to say.

What’s your take on beholders? How have you seen them used or how have you used them yourself in a campaign?
Did you lose your hoodie betting on the latest Mordenkainen’s Mayhem fight? Did you think the installment was just as interesting or not as riveting as last week’s?
Do you have any advice for Wayne and his Lycanthropy problems?

Thank you for the ST:TNG analogy, Ostron.

I’m going to be imagining beholders as voiced by John de Lancie, henceforward.

Did she say Shrinky Dinks?! Deep breaths… I’m going to put aside my elitist miniature tendencies for an open minded view here. I rather like the work on the ArcKnight flats. For those who don’t want to paint miniatures, these offer a valid way of bringing your gaming table to life. There’s no confusing a two dimensional beholder and a three dimensional beholder. I will also agree with Ostron that the scenery bits and spell effects packs are phenomenal. You here that Ostron? Phenomenal. (hint-hint)

I was very interested in the comment about Lennon having transitioned from being a digital DM to a table-top DM. I’d love to hear more about how he ran a session as a digital DM (Roll20? How did you make maps?, Digital resources, etc.) and what it was that triggered the move to table top.

If I start to DM again, I’d thought of going digital in order to be able to include some remote players. I’d love to dodge the trapdoors and IEDs that Lennon has already worked through. Thank you.

Loved the episode. Like always you (pl.) provide a LOT of great and practical content.

Towards the end, you were discussing the proper use of a character getting bit by a were-creature, whether they survive the process, and how they play the resulting change to their character.

But I stumbled a bit during that section because of the pronunciation of the word “lycanthropy”.

It seemed that the majority preferred to pronounce it “ly-can-THRO-py” while dictionary.com says that the correct pronunciation is “ly-CAN-thro-py”.

You can do what you want with this. I was just letting you know that my ears/brain parsing that part of the episode got knocked out of your great discussion by that word.

Please, keep podcasting. You guys do such a GREAT JOB!
