Heroes Rise, eleventh entry: Of Strongholds and Strong Foes

Welcome, brave adventurers…

… to the eleventh entry into the Heroes Rise chronicle. This episode was recorded on Saturday, 10th February 2018, and made available for download on Wednesday, 14th February 2018 at heroesrisepodcast.com

We’ve got a packed show for you today, and talking of packs in our Adventurer’s Packs this week… Ryu shows us how whilst you can’t build Rome in a day, you could probably generate it in about 3 minutes. Next, we take a look at some D&D News as we cover:

  • The latest from Cryptic Studios and Beamdog as we look at updates for the Neverwinter MMO and NWN:EE
  • Matt Colville and Mike Shea’s latest Kickstarters
  • And all the latest from WotC and DNDB on MTOF

After that we take a Short Rest and visit the Candlekeep Archives for the lowdown on Plane Shift: Ixalan; before finishing off the show by looking into the Scrying Pool to see what you have to say.

mThis Week’s Community Questions
Will you be backing Matt Colville or Mike Shea’s Kickstarters?
And now that we have some more details on Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, what are you most looking forward to? Do you like the Volo’s Guide style, or would you prefer something more like a Monster Manual or Xanathar’s Guide?
Have you tried any of the Plane Shift campaign settings?

Wise adventurers?! A chromatic dragon sympathizer, a slavering “appreciator” of maps, and a calculating crunch daddy… who spend a lot of time talking about software patches (very curious what percentage of your audience tunes in for those).

Congratulations on making this podcast go to 11. And thanks for the belated valentine.

Always happy to commune… so, here are my answers:

I’ve already backed those two Kickstarters; it’s always nice when you KNOW something’s definitely getting funded and when you like a lot of what the respective creators have to say via other online channels.

Beyond a bit of personal curiosity, I’m “meh” about a lot of the specific lore of Mordenkainen as my worldbuilding went off the WotC rails a long time ago… but I’m looking forward to the higher level foes and PC racial options (I enjoyed what Volo’s and SCAG did for those).

I’m curious about the Plane Shifts and have flipped through them but for some reason I’m more intimidated by the MtG settings than I am by the old D&D ones. Maybe I’m just less worried about Blackmoor purists lurking in my FLGS. I really love the worldbuilding in MtG, though, and I’ll probably nick a couple of ideas. One of my ideas for a PC (for when I get myself on the other side of the screen again) is partially inspired by what I’ve gleaned about Chandra Nalaar… so… yeah… there are awesome stories to be told.

I’ve been listening since episode one and well done. I think I too caught the Ryu Flu, but I’m feeling much better. I first saw D&D at a friend’s house in 1980. When the red Basic Set was introduced in 1984 (if I remember correctly) I was hooked. Thank you for all the work you do.
